What you will see
- A manual changeover lever or an automatic transfer switch near the main board.
- A generator connected somewhere other than a proper changeover.
- Flickering or tripping when the generator starts or stops.
Why it happens
If a generator or inverter feeds power back into the grid during load-shedding, it can energise a line that a lineman believes is dead. It can also damage your inverter or generator when the grid returns. A correctly wired changeover physically keeps the sources apart.
What you can check yourself
- Find your changeover and learn which positions mean grid, generator and off.
- Check that the generator only connects through that changeover.
- Tell us if an electrician has added or moved anything in the board.
What not to do
- Do not connect a generator directly into a socket or the distribution board.
- Do not switch the changeover while heavy loads are running.
- Do not bypass the changeover to run everything at once.
When to call us
- You are not sure how your generator connects.
- The system trips or behaves oddly when the generator starts.
