For how a generator should be connected, see using a home generator with a hybrid inverter. This page is for when it is connected and not working.
Generator not working with inverter: what it means
A hybrid or off-grid inverter treats the generator like the grid. It checks voltage and frequency before accepting the power and keeps checking while connected. If either goes outside its limits, it drops the generator, runs the load from the battery, waits and tries again. You may see an alarm such as "AC input abnormal", "grid frequency high/low" or "grid lost". Alarm names vary by brand; check your manual.
So a generator that runs fine on its own can still be refused. The inverter is strict on purpose, because poor power stresses its charger and your appliances.
Which type of inverter do you have?
| Inverter type | Will it use a generator? | What usually goes wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Off-grid or hybrid inverter-charger with an AC input | Yes, through the AC input or generator port | Input range too strict, frequency drift, undersized generator |
| Grid-tied hybrid inverter (battery plus net billing) | Depends on the model: some have a generator port or setting | Grid-standard limits are tight, so generator power is rejected |
| On-grid inverter (no battery) | Not without a controller designed for it | Shuts down, or risks pushing power back into the generator |
For factories running on-grid solar with a diesel or gas generator, the answer is a hybrid controller, not a setting change. See solar and generator hybrid systems.

Quick-check table
| Symptom | Likely cause | Safe owner check | Call an engineer if... |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inverter not accepting generator at all | Input range too strict, wrong port, changeover not switched | Check the changeover position and the alarm text | It still refuses with a stable generator |
| Accepts it, then drops it every few minutes | Frequency or voltage drifting, especially when loads change | Note what was switching on when it dropped | It drops with light loads |
| Drops it when battery charging starts | Generator too small for charging plus load | Switch off heavy loads and see if it holds | It drops even with loads off |
| Generator frequency error inverter alarm | Generator speed not steady, or set off 50 Hz | Note the reading on the generator's meter, if it has one | It repeats; the generator may need servicing |
| Generator not charging battery | Charging source set to solar only, or AC charge current set very low | Read the battery charge power in the app | Settings look right and it still will not charge |
| Generator labours, smokes or stalls | Overloaded generator | Reduce load at once | It continues at normal load |
| Lights flicker and appliances buzz on generator | Poor generator voltage or waveform | Unplug sensitive electronics | It continues |
Safety first
Safety box. Run the generator outdoors, well away from doors, windows and vents, because its exhaust contains carbon monoxide. Never connect a generator to the inverter's output side or straight into house sockets; it must feed the inverter's input through a proper changeover, as your installer wired it. Switch over only in the order your installer showed you. Do not open the inverter, battery or DC wiring. If you see sparks, smell burning or the changeover is hot, switch off safely and call a qualified engineer. See changeover switch for solar, generator and WAPDA.
Safe owner checks, step by step
- Write down the alarm shown on the inverter when the generator is refused or dropped, and photograph it.
- Start the generator with the house loads off and let it warm up and settle for a few minutes before switching the changeover. A cold generator often runs unsteadily.
- Check the changeover position and, by sight only, whether any breaker on the generator line has tripped.
- Add loads gradually. Leave ACs, motors and irons until the inverter has accepted the generator and the battery is charging. If it drops the generator each time a big load starts, that is a strong clue.
- Watch the generator's own meter, if it has one. A frequency that swings well away from 50 Hz, or a voltage that dips heavily, points to the generator.
- Check the app: is the inverter showing the AC input as connected, and is battery charge power above zero?
- Note the generator's kVA rating, fuel type and age, and the inverter model.
- Send it all to your installer. Do not change inverter input or charging settings yourself unless your manual says owners may.
Generator frequency error inverter alarms
Frequency depends on engine speed. The governor tries to hold 50 Hz, but on many small petrol and older diesel sets:
- frequency drops when a big load switches on and the engine slows;
- frequency rises when the load drops away suddenly;
- a worn governor or a speed set slightly wrong keeps it off 50 Hz all the time.
The inverter sees this as a bad grid. A generator mechanic can service the governor and set the speed; an inverter engineer can check whether a wider input setting is available. Inverter-type generators usually hold frequency and voltage more steadily than open-frame sets.
Input range settings
Many off-grid and hybrid inverter-chargers offer a wide input range for appliances and a much narrower one for sensitive electronics such as computers; one manufacturer's datasheet we checked shows exactly this choice. On a generator, the narrow setting often causes refusals. Names and limits differ by brand. Grid-tied hybrids follow grid-standard limits, so a model without a generator mode may never accept a small generator reliably.
Generator not charging battery
If the inverter has accepted the generator but the battery is not charging, look at these causes first:
- Charging source priority is set to solar only, so the inverter will not charge from AC input. Our guide to SBU, SUB and utility-first modes explains these settings, and charging the battery from the grid covers when AC charging makes sense.
- Maximum AC charging current is set very low, or was lowered on purpose to protect a small generator.
- The battery is already full, or the BMS is limiting charge because it is hot or cold.
- Battery communication fault: the inverter does not know how much the battery may take. See battery and inverter communication.
- The generator keeps dropping out, so charging never gets going.
An engineer should set the AC charging current so that charging plus house load stays within the generator's capacity.
What an engineer will check
- Generator output under load: voltage, frequency and waveform, measured while the inverter is charging.
- Generator size against charging power plus the loads run during generator hours.
- Inverter settings: input range, generator mode, charging priority, AC charge current, and battery cut-off levels.
- Changeover wiring and breakers on the generator line.
- Neutral and earth arrangement, which can differ between the grid and a generator and must be done correctly. See solar earthing and surge protection.
- Phase arrangement: a single-phase generator on a three-phase inverter, or the reverse, needs a proper design.
If the inverter overloads or restarts rather than refusing the generator, see inverter overload and inverter keeps restarting. For grid outages, see inverter grid fault during load-shedding.
How to prevent generator problems
- Size the generator for battery charging plus the loads you will run on it, with margin.
- Service the generator regularly, including the governor and air filter.
- Use a correctly rated changeover, wired by a qualified electrician.
- Let the generator warm up before switching over, and add heavy loads gradually.
How Solar Works handles generator integration
Hybrid power is one of our specialist areas. Solar Works Pakistan was founded in 2021; our power-generation experience goes back to the 1980s through our founder, Akram Ullah Khan. We no longer sell generators, but we design systems around the generator you already have; see our engineering approach to hybrid systems with generators and our solar installation services.
If we installed your system, WhatsApp 0336 666 4321 with a photo of the inverter screen or app alarm, the inverter model and the generator's rating plate. Our own engineering staff handle the complaint, and our 1-year service warranty applies under the applicable project terms. Generator servicing itself is outside our scope. See how after-sales service works.
We can also inspect generator and inverter integration on systems installed by other companies, as a chargeable service, across Punjab.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my inverter not accepting generator power?
Usually the generator's frequency or voltage is outside the inverter's accepted range, or a narrow input range is set. An undersized generator, the changeover position or a model without generator support can also be the cause.
What does a generator frequency error on an inverter mean?
It means the generator's frequency has moved away from 50 Hz by more than the inverter allows, usually because the engine speed changes as loads switch on and off. Servicing the governor, adding loads gradually and checking the inverter's input setting usually help.
Why is my generator not charging my battery?
Check whether the inverter is set to charge from solar only, whether the AC charging current is set very low, and whether the battery is full or temperature-limited. If the generator keeps dropping out, charging will not start either.
What size generator do I need for my hybrid inverter?
It must cover the inverter's battery charging power plus the loads you run during generator hours, with margin. An engineer can work it out from your inverter model and load list; see our home generator guide.
Can I run my on-grid inverter on a generator?
Not with an ordinary on-grid inverter. It is not designed to treat a generator as a grid, and power flowing back into a generator can damage it. Factories use a dedicated hybrid controller for this.
Does Solar Works sell generators?
No. We no longer sell generators, but we design and set up solar systems to work with the generator you already have.
