Solar for Farmhouses in Punjab
Short answer
Solar for a farmhouse should be planned around how the house is used. A family home on a farm, used every day, suits a hybrid system much like a city house. A weekend farmhouse that stands empty from Monday to Friday needs a different design, because under net billing most weekday output would be exported at a low rate. Long cable runs, weak rural supply, theft and lightning are the other points that make a farmhouse different from a town rooftop.
This guide is about the farmhouse as a residence: lights, fans, ACs, the house water pump, kitchen, security and the outdoor areas. Farm machinery and tubewells are a separate subject, covered below and in our solar tubewell guide.
Start with how the farmhouse is used
| Use pattern | Typical loads | Design priority |
|---|---|---|
| Family home on the farm, lived in daily | Fans, ACs, lights, fridge, water pump, kitchen | Self-use in daytime, battery for evenings and outages |
| Weekend or holiday farmhouse | Heavy use 1-3 days a week, light security load on other days | Battery and controlled export, so weekday output is not wasted |
| Event or guest farmhouse | Large AC and lighting load on event days | Grid or generator for peaks; solar for the base |
| Remote house with no grid connection | Everything | Off-grid system sized for the worst season |
Write down which of these you are before asking for a quote. It changes the battery, the inverter and whether grid export matters at all.

Hybrid, on-grid or off-grid?
Our guide to hybrid vs on-grid vs off-grid explains the three types. For farmhouses, the choice usually comes down to the grid connection.
- Grid connection available, reasonable supply: a hybrid system is normally the right choice. Solar runs the house in daytime, the battery carries the evening and load-shedding, and the grid tops up.
- Grid connection available but weak: rural feeders often have long outages and low or unstable voltage. A hybrid inverter can be set to rely mostly on solar and battery and use the grid only as a backup. A larger battery is common.
- No grid connection, or a very costly one: an off-grid system can make sense. It must be sized for winter and cloudy spells, usually with a generator as a reserve. Read our off-grid solar inverter guide before deciding.
Net billing and the weekend farmhouse
New solar connections now come under NEPRA's net billing rules. Units you import are billed at your normal tariff; units you export are credited at a much lower rate. The rules refer to three-phase 400 V and 11 kV consumers, and system size cannot exceed sanctioned load. See our net metering and net billing guide and, if your connection is single-phase, converting to three-phase.
For a weekend farmhouse this matters a lot.
Example arithmetic only, with round illustrative numbers: if a 10 kW system produces about 40 units on a clear day and the house is busy on 2 days a week, about 200 units a week are produced on the 5 quiet days. If the caretaker's quarters, security lights and fridge use 8 units a day, about 160 of those units are exported at the low rate each week. That is a lot of panel working for very little.
Ways to handle it:
- Size the panels smaller and add a battery, so weekend evenings are covered from stored energy.
- Move flexible loads to weekdays, such as filling water tanks or running the caretaker's AC.
- Limit export where it is not worth having; see our zero export device guide.
- Do not apply for net billing at all, if the system is designed mainly for backup and self-use.
Long cable runs
Farmhouses spread out. Panels may sit on an outbuilding or a ground frame some distance from the main house, and the house, staff quarters, gate and pump room can be far apart.
- Every long run needs a cable size check. Over a long distance, an undersized cable wastes energy as heat and lowers the voltage at the far end. We size each run for its length and current. See our solar cable size guide.
- Keep the battery next to the inverter. Battery cables carry high current at low voltage, so they must be short and heavy.
- Bury or protect cables properly. Use suitable conduit or armoured cable underground, mark the route, and keep it away from where tractors and vehicles turn.
- Ground-mounted arrays need foundations, fencing and cleaning access. Our ground-mounted solar guide covers these, although it is written mainly for factories.
Security: empty houses and open land
A farmhouse is often empty or lightly staffed. Panels on a ground frame or a low roof, far from neighbours, are an easy target.
- Mount panels where they are hard to reach, and fence ground arrays.
-
- Put CCTV, gate lights and alarms on the backed-up circuit, so they keep working through outages.
- Keep a written list of panel serial numbers.
- Use remote monitoring, so you can see from the city if output suddenly drops. See our solar monitoring app guide.
Our full guide to solar panel theft protection covers each layer. Owners who live abroad and manage a family farmhouse from a distance should also read solar for overseas Pakistanis.
Lightning, storms, dust and birds
Open land is more exposed than a town roof. A tall array or a roof that stands above the trees is more likely to attract a strike.
- Proper earthing for the structure and equipment, and surge protection on both DC and AC sides. See solar earthing and surge protection.
- Structures designed for the wind on open ground. See storm and lightning safety.
- A cleaning plan: fields, dirt tracks and harvest dust settle on panels quickly.
Water: house pump vs tubewell
A farmhouse usually has a domestic water pump filling an overhead tank. That is an ordinary house load, and a hybrid system can run it in daylight. See running a home water pump on solar.
A tubewell for irrigation is a different machine, usually run through a solar VFD rather than the house inverter. Our solar tubewell guide explains sizing by HP and bore depth.
Solar Works Pakistan designs and installs solar tubewell and farm-work systems.
Generators
Many farmhouses already have a generator. It can work with a hybrid inverter as a backup source, charging the battery or supplying the house when solar and battery are not enough. Our guide to using a home generator with a hybrid inverter explains the wiring and settings. We do not sell generators, but we integrate existing sets.
Farmhouse solar price
Farmhouse systems are quoted after a survey, because cable runs, structures and battery size vary so much.

Frequently asked questions
Which solar system is best for a farmhouse?
For a farmhouse with a grid connection, a hybrid system with a lithium battery is usually the right choice. Where there is no connection, an off-grid system with a generator as reserve can work. How often the house is used decides the battery and panel size.
Is net billing worth it for a weekend farmhouse?
Often not much, because most weekday output would be exported at the low net billing rate. A smaller array with a battery, or limited export, usually suits a weekend house better. Check your own pattern with real numbers before deciding.
How do I stop solar plates being stolen from my farmhouse?
Fence ground arrays, mount roof panels out of easy reach, use anti-theft fasteners, keep CCTV and lights on the backup circuit, and record the serial numbers. Remote monitoring lets you spot a sudden drop in output from the city.
Can the panels be far from the house?
Yes, but every long cable run must be sized for its length so that energy is not lost as heat. The battery should stay close to the inverter. Underground cables need proper conduit or armouring.
Can the same system run my tubewell?
Usually not. A tubewell normally runs on its own solar VFD system sized by HP and bore depth, separate from the house.
Can I keep using my generator?
Yes. A hybrid inverter can use a generator as a backup source when solar and battery are not enough. It needs correct wiring and settings so the two do not fight each other.
