Average Lifespan of Solar Panels: How Long They Last and How They Degrade

Short answer

The average lifespan of solar panels is measured in decades: good-quality panels are generally designed to keep producing for 25 to 30 years or more, losing a small share of output each year rather than suddenly stopping. A large review of field data by the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory found a median power loss of about 0.5% per year. How long your panels actually last depends on quality, installation, heat, dust and care.

What "lifespan" means for a solar panel

A solar panel (solar plate) has no moving parts, so it rarely "dies" on a set date. Instead, it slowly produces a little less each year. That gradual loss is called degradation.

So there are really two questions:

  1. Useful life: how many years the panel keeps producing a worthwhile share of its original power.
  2. Warranted performance: how much output the manufacturer guarantees over a stated period.

Manufacturers usually express the second as a linear performance warranty: the panel will still deliver at least a stated percentage of its rated power after a stated number of years. The exact terms differ by brand and model, so we do not quote them here. They are.

How fast do solar panels degrade?

The best-known study of this is a review by the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), which gathered around 2,000 measured degradation rates from field installations over several decades. It found a median loss of about 0.5% per year, with a mean of about 0.8% per year, and most rates below 1% per year (NREL, NREL presentation). Hot climates showed somewhat higher losses in some data.

Example arithmetic

For illustration only, not a promise for any product: if a panel loses 0.5% of its original output each year, then after 20 years it would produce roughly 90% of what it made when new.

YearOutput at 0.5%/yr loss (illustrative)Output at 0.8%/yr loss (illustrative)
1about 99.5%about 99.2%
10about 95%about 92%
20about 90%about 84%
25about 87.5%about 80%

These are round, simplified numbers. Real panels often lose a little more in the first year, then settle into a steadier rate. Your panel's datasheet and warranty show the manufacturer's own figures.

Why newer panels tend to degrade more slowly

Much of the field data behind older studies came from earlier panel generations. Modern N-type panels (TOPCon, heterojunction, back-contact) generally suffer less early light-induced loss and lose output more slowly than older P-type panels, which is why manufacturers tend to offer stronger performance warranties on them. See our N-type vs P-type guide.

Double-glass panels also tend to resist moisture and back-sheet cracking better than panels with a plastic back sheet.

What shortens solar panel lifespan in Punjab

Punjab is tough on equipment: very hot summers, dust storms, monsoon humidity, winter fog and smog. These are the main causes of early panel problems:

CauseWhat happensHow to reduce it
HeatAccelerates material ageing; reduces output on hot daysGood airflow under panels; panels with a good temperature coefficient
Dust and soilingLowers output; uneven dirt can cause hot spotsRegular, gentle cleaning
Micro-cracksSmall cell cracks grow over time and cut outputCareful handling and transport; never walk on panels
Poor structureFlexing frames, vibration and loose clamps stress the glass and cellsEngineered structure, correct clamps and spacing
Water ingressMoisture corrodes cells and connectionsQuality panels, sealed junction boxes, correct cable routing
Bad connectorsLoose or mismatched MC4 connectors overheatMatched connectors crimped with the right tool
ShadingPartial shade forces bypass diodes to work hard and can create hot spotsDesign around shade from water tanks, walls and trees
Fake or grade-B panelsFaster degradation and weak warranty supportVerify serial numbers with the manufacturer

Cleaning: helpful if done right

Dust, bird droppings and smog grime reduce output. Clean with water and a soft brush or sponge, ideally early morning or evening when panels are cool. Avoid harsh chemicals, scrubbing pads and high-pressure jets, which can damage the glass coating and seals. Our solar panel cleaning guide covers timing and water quality.

Start with a genuine panel

The longest-lasting panel is a genuine grade-A one from a reputable maker. Check serials on the manufacturer's site using our guide to genuine solar panels, and compare brands fairly with best solar panels in Pakistan.

Panels vs the rest of the system

Panels usually outlast the other parts of a solar system. Plan for that:

Each major component carries its own manufacturer's warranty per product.

How Solar Works Pakistan helps your system last

Long life comes from design and installation as much as from the panel itself:

  1. Engineering first. Our in-house engineers design each system around your load, site and future expansion.
  2. Structures built for the site. Designed in-house and fabricated and assembled by our own teams on site, with a 3-year structure warranty.
  3. Safe commissioning. All necessary tests and checks are completed before handover.
  4. Monitoring. New systems are designed with monitoring, so drops in output can be spotted early.
  5. After-sales support. A 1-year service warranty under the applicable project terms, and a 48-hour target to send service personnel after a complaint is registered. After the first year, service is available on a chargeable basis.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average lifespan of solar panels?

Good-quality panels are generally designed to keep producing for 25 to 30 years or more. They do not usually stop suddenly; they lose a small share of output each year. Actual life depends on quality, installation and care.

How much power do solar panels lose each year?

A major NREL review of field data found a median loss of about 0.5% per year, with most panels losing less than 1% per year. Modern N-type panels generally degrade more slowly than older types; check your panel's datasheet for its exact figures.

What happens to solar panels after 25 years?

In most cases they keep working, at a somewhat lower output than when new. Whether to keep or replace them depends on how much they still produce and the condition of the rest of the system.

Does heat in Punjab shorten solar panel life?

High heat speeds up material ageing and reduces output on hot days. Good airflow under the panels, quality panels with a good temperature coefficient and a well-built structure all help.

What lasts longer, the panels or the inverter?

Usually the panels. Inverters contain electronics that work hard every day and typically need repair or replacement sooner. Batteries also age with use.

Does cleaning extend the life of solar panels?

Regular, gentle cleaning keeps output up and helps prevent hot spots from uneven dirt. Harsh cleaning, such as high-pressure jets or abrasive pads, can do more harm than good.

What warranty do solar panels come with?

Panels carry a manufacturer product warranty and a performance warranty, which vary by brand and model. Solar Works Pakistan gives the manufacturer's warranty for each product.
