What makes Narowal district different

Narowal district lies in the far north-east of Punjab, on the Ravi, with three tehsils: Narowal, Shakargarh and Zafarwal. India borders it to the north and south-east, and Sialkot district lies to the west. Shakargarh tehsil is home to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, reached by pilgrims through the Kartarpur Corridor since 2019.

The local economy rests on farming, especially good-quality rice, alongside wheat, maize and sugarcane. Football stitching and handicrafts are significant in Narowal, and the city has several universities and medical colleges. Rice, stitching and education each bring a different load pattern, so we take them one at a time.

Rice husking and milling units

Rice units run heavy motors during the post-harvest season and lighter loads the rest of the year. Size to the load that runs most months, because exported surplus earns much less than imported units cost under net billing. Football stitching and handicraft workshops

Stitching workshops are light-load, daytime and labour-intensive: fans, lights, a few machines and, increasingly, ACs. That is close to an ideal solar profile. The usual questions are whether to add a battery for load-shedding during working hours and how to wire a workshop that shares a building with a house. Universities, colleges and schools

Educational buildings use most of their power in daylight and sit almost empty in the evenings and over holidays. Under net billing, the holiday surplus earns little, so sizing to term-time daytime use matters more than covering the whole bill. Homes and border villages

Away from Narowal city, many houses are single-phase with low sanctioned loads, and outages can be long. Three points matter:

  2. Export needs paperwork. To export, you usually need a three-phase connection (single-phase to three-phase) and a sanctioned load at least as large as your solar (increasing sanctioned load).
  3. Security and storms. Farmhouses and village homes are often empty at night or for weeks at a time. Anti-theft fasteners, a lockable inverter space and good anchoring are worth planning in; see solar panel theft protection and storm and lightning safety.
