What you will see

  • The app or battery display reports cell imbalance or a cell-voltage warning.
  • Charging pauses repeatedly before the expected endpoint.
  • Backup ends unexpectedly and a battery warning appears.
  • A warning returns after being acknowledged or after a restart.

Why it happens

A battery’s total voltage does not show whether every individual cell is within its permitted range. Solis notes that an individual cell can reach an excessive voltage even while the overall battery reading appears unremarkable. The precise alarm and battery data are needed to identify the condition.

Managed lithium batteries may include internal balancing and protections for cell voltage, charging and discharge. These functions have product-specific operating conditions. A balancing function is not permission for the customer to raise charging voltage or bypass a warning.

The service review should distinguish a charge-alignment issue from a cell, sensing or other battery fault. Report whether the warning began after installation, a long period without use, an expansion or an equipment change. Do not label a battery “failed” solely from an unfamiliar message.

The pack voltage can look ordinary while one cell is at its limit. That is different from two batteries showing different percentages.

Illustration only. Cell limits and balancing are specific to each LiFePO4 battery. Never open the battery or use an external balancer.

What cell imbalance means

A 48 V lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) home battery usually has 16 cells in series. The same current flows through each, so ideally they fill and empty together. In practice they never stay exactly matched.

Because the cells are in series, the weakest link sets the limits:

  • When charging, the fullest cell hits its maximum voltage first. The BMS must stop or slow charging, even though other cells still have room.
  • When discharging, the emptiest cell hits its minimum voltage first. The BMS cuts off the battery, even though other cells still hold energy.

The battery then behaves as if it were smaller than its rating. Our battery management system guide covers BMS protections in general.

Why the cells drift apart

  • Manufacturing tolerance. No two cells leave the factory with exactly the same capacity, so good makers grade and match them.
  • Temperature differences. Cells on a warmer side of the pack self-discharge and age a little faster.
  • Uneven ageing. Each cell ages at its own pace. A weak cell is stressed on both charge and discharge, so the gap tends to widen.
  • The battery rarely reaches full. Many BMS units balance only near the top of charge. If settings or short winter days keep the battery from getting there, balancing seldom runs.
  • Long storage or deep discharge. A battery left empty or unused for weeks, for example after a long trip, can come back with cells further apart.

Why LiFePO4 hides imbalance until the ends

LiFePO4 voltage is very flat through most of the charge, so two cells can look almost identical in the middle while holding different amounts of energy. The gap shows only near full or empty, which is why imbalance often looks like a sudden percentage jump at the top or bottom. For percentage problems in general, see battery percentage wrong or jumping.

Cell voltage difference: where to see it

Many batteries and some inverter apps show the maximum and minimum cell voltage, or the gap between them, labelled "cell voltage difference", "cell delta" or similar, usually in millivolts. Some show it only through the installer's software.

Read it near full charge on a sunny afternoon and near empty before dawn; in the middle of the charge the gap usually looks small because of the flat curve. The acceptable limit and alarm threshold are set by each manufacturer. A gap that stays steady is far less worrying than one that grows every week.

Safety first

Safety box. A lithium battery stores a lot of energy even when the inverter is off. Never open the battery case, unplug its power or communication cables, or connect a separate charger to "top up" a low cell. If the battery is swollen, hot to touch, hissing, smoking or smells of burning, switch off in the manufacturer's sequence only if you can do so safely, keep everyone away and call a qualified engineer. See lithium battery swelling.

Safe owner checks, step by step

  1. Read the alarm exactly. Photograph the inverter screen and the battery's display or LEDs, with the date, time and SOC.
  2. Screenshot the app: SOC, battery voltage, current, temperature and any cell data.
  3. Note the pattern. Does the alarm come near full, near empty, or at random? On hot days only?
  4. Check the battery's surroundings. Sun, the inverter's hot air or a closed store room all warm one side of the pack. See where to install your inverter and battery.
  5. Let it reach full charge, if your system normally allows it. A long sunny day that takes the battery to 100% gives the BMS time to balance. Do not change charge voltages or cut-off settings yourself; ask your installer if the battery never gets to full.
  6. Watch two or three cycles. One odd reading after a cloudy week is common; a pattern is what an engineer needs.
  7. Send the evidence. WhatsApp the photos, screenshots, battery model and inverter model to your installer.

Battery balancing: how the BMS fixes small gaps

Battery balancing brings cells back together. Most home batteries balance passively, bleeding a little energy from the fullest cells as heat near full charge; some move energy actively from fuller to emptier cells. Either way the balancing current is small: it corrects daily drift over time, not a large gap in one afternoon.

BMS balancing problem: when balancing cannot keep up

A BMS balancing problem is likely when the gap returns quickly after every full charge, or grows despite regular full charges. Common reasons:

  • one cell has higher self-discharge than the rest, so it drifts again every night;
  • the battery hardly ever reaches the voltage at which balancing starts, often because of open-loop settings or a communication fault (see battery and inverter communication);
  • a fault in the BMS's balancing or cell-sensing circuit;
  • in multi-module packs, one module is older or weaker than the others.

What an engineer will check

  • Cell-level data and logs, usually with the maker's service software.
  • Charge settings: charge voltage, time allowed near full, and the battery type selected in the inverter.
  • Communication: whether the inverter follows the BMS's limits (closed loop).
  • Temperature, firmware and module mismatch in stacked batteries.
  • Capacity: a controlled test to separate imbalance from real capacity loss.

If a cell is faulty, the battery goes to the manufacturer under its warranty process. If the battery is simply worn, our guide on when to replace or expand your solar battery explains the options.

How to prevent lithium battery cell imbalance

  • Install the battery in a shaded, ventilated spot, away from the inverter's exhaust.
  • Use a battery on the inverter maker's compatibility list, with the communication cable connected.
  • Let the battery reach full charge regularly, as the manufacturer recommends.
  • Do not mix old and new modules, or different brands, in one bank.
  • Watch backup time and alarms in the app; small changes are easier to fix early.

How Solar Works handles battery complaints

We supply lithium batteries and BESS from Huawei, Sungrow and Luminey, matched to compatible inverters, and check battery-inverter communication at commissioning.

If we installed your system, WhatsApp 0336 666 4321 with a photo of the inverter screen or app, the battery model and the inverter model. Our own engineering staff handle the complaint, and our 1-year service warranty applies under the applicable project terms. Cell or BMS defects go through the manufacturer's warranty per product. See how after-sales service works.

We can also inspect batteries on systems installed by other companies, as a chargeable service, across Punjab.

Frequently asked questions

What is cell imbalance in a lithium battery?

It means the cells inside the battery are at different levels of charge. Because they are connected in series, the fullest cell stops charging early and the emptiest stops discharging early, so you get less usable energy.

What cell voltage difference is normal in a lithium battery?

A small difference is normal, and it is usually smallest in the middle of the charge and largest near full or empty. The acceptable limit is set by each manufacturer, so check your model's manual and watch whether the gap is steady or growing.

How do I fix cell imbalance in my solar battery?

Let the battery reach full charge regularly so the BMS can balance it, keep it cool, and make sure communication with the inverter works. If the gap keeps returning, an engineer needs to check the cells and BMS. Never open the battery or charge single cells yourself.

Why does my lithium battery cut off at 20% at night?

Often one cell has reached its minimum voltage before the others, so the BMS disconnects the battery while the overall percentage still looks healthy. Imbalance, a weak cell or a wrong cut-off setting can all cause this.

Why is my BMS not balancing the cells?

Many batteries balance only near full charge, so a battery that never gets there seldom balances. A communication fault, wrong charge settings or a fault in the BMS itself can also stop it. This is a BMS balancing problem for an engineer to diagnose.

Can cell imbalance damage my battery?

The BMS protects the cells by cutting off early, so the main effect is lost capacity. A large or growing gap can point to a failing cell, which should be checked before it gets worse.

What you can check yourself

  • Copy the complete alarm text and code exactly, including whether the inverter or battery reported it.
  • Save the date, time and charge percentage at the event.
  • Record whether the system was charging, discharging or idle.
  • Note whether the same warning occurs at a similar point in each cycle.
  • Capture any cell information already available in the normal user app, without entering service menus.
  • If the warning disappears by itself, keep the record. Its disappearance does not explain why it occurred, and a screenshot can help if it returns later.

What not to do

  • Do not open the battery, connect to individual cells, use an external balancer or select lead-acid equalisation settings for a lithium battery.
  • Do not force repeated full-charge or deep-discharge cycles as an improvised repair.

When to call us

  • Contact us promptly for recurring cell alarms, interrupted charging or unexpected shutdowns. Follow any shutdown instruction supplied for your exact system only when it is safe to do so. If swelling, smoke or unusual smells are present, move away and follow our guide on batteries that swell, leak or smell.
