Why it happens
The utility bill has its own reading period and charge components, which need to be identified before a private allocation is checked.
Next distinguish utility imports, solar generation, utility exports and each occupant’s recorded consumption. A generation total cannot automatically be allocated as though all of it was exported or used by one party.
The statement should identify the agreed treatment of shared loads, losses, fixed charges, adjustments and any surplus. Rates and entitlements should come from the relevant agreement and applicable supply conditions, not from another property’s example.

- Gather the agreement, complete utility bill and dated submeter records.
- Align the opening and closing dates as closely as the records allow.
- List common loads and who pays for them.

- Label estimates and unresolved differences clearly. Keep each party’s payment record separate from the calculation of consumption.
What not to do
- Do not invent missing readings, assume one party owns every solar benefit or apply an export rate without an agreed basis. Do not alter meters or supply wiring to settle an accounting disagreement.
