What you will see
- A different meter serial number on the next bill.
- An initial reading that is not zero.
- Separate import, export or time-of-use registers.
- A bill covering days under both the old and new meters.
Why it happens
The practical review needs the replacement date, old final readings, new initial readings and the identity of each meter. Where a multiplying factor applies, ask the utility to confirm it in the account record.
These are evidence requests, not a substitute for the applicable billing rules. Ask how the replacement period was calculated and raise unresolved discrepancies through the utility’s complaint route, preserving the reference for any further escalation.
Keep the solar app’s report for the same period as supporting information. It should not be substituted for a utility register without checking what each device measures.

What you can check yourself
- Retain the replacement job sheet or acknowledgment.
- Request a record of relevant readings and serial numbers.
- Save the bills immediately before and after the change.
- Keep dated photographs already available from a safe position.
- If a final reading could not be obtained, ask how that fact was recorded and how the affected period will be assessed.
What not to do
- Do not remove seals or attempt to access hidden meter information yourself. Do not combine readings from different serial numbers as though one continuous meter recorded them. Avoid inventing an old final reading from an app estimate.
