This page is a routine procedure for owners. If your inverter shows an alarm, read our inverter faults guide first to understand what it means.
How to restart solar inverter equipment: why the order matters
A solar system has three energy sources that do not switch off together:
- The grid (AC), which you can isolate with a breaker.
- The panels (DC), which produce voltage whenever there is daylight. You cannot switch off the panels themselves, only isolate them from the inverter.
- The battery (DC), which holds stored energy even when everything else is off.
Switching in the wrong order can make a DC isolator break current under load, which causes arcing and wears the switch. It can also leave the inverter half-powered, so it shows a false alarm. Solis, for example, tells installers to switch off the AC breaker first so that the DC switch opens with no current flowing, and then to wait 5 to 10 minutes before any work because the inverter still holds charge inside.
Safety box. Switching off does not make the roof cables or the battery safe to touch. Never open the inverter, the battery or a junction box, and never pull MC4 connectors. If you see smoke, smell burning, see water inside equipment or a swollen battery, do not use any switches near it. Leave the area and call a qualified engineer (or emergency services for fire). After a flood, read solar system after flood instead.

Quick-check table: restart problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Safe owner check | Call an engineer if... |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inverter shows "No grid" for a few minutes after restart | Normal grid check after reconnection | Wait; check the AC breaker is on | It stays after the grid is clearly back |
| Inverter shows a battery alarm after restart | Battery switched on late or not at all | Check the battery breaker and battery power button | The alarm stays once the battery is on |
| A breaker trips the moment you switch it on | Fault on that circuit | Leave it off; note which breaker | Always. Do not reset it again |
| Inverter screen stays dark after the full sequence | No DC or battery supply, or an internal fault | Confirm each switch position against your notes | Always; see inverter not turning on |
| Same fault returns within minutes or hours | The fault is real, not a glitch | Photograph the screen and app | Always |
| Inverter restarts itself repeatedly | Grid, heat or battery problem | Note times and alarms | See inverter keeps restarting |
Before you start
- Photograph the screen and the app alarm list. Once you restart, some inverters clear the active alarm, and the engineer loses the clue.
- Find your switches. Typically: the AC output or load breaker, the AC grid (input) breaker, the DC isolator for the panels (on the inverter or a separate box), and the battery breaker or battery power button. Our breakers and protection page explains what each device does.
- Check the manual for your inverter and battery model, or the handover sheet from your installer.
- Switch off heavy loads such as ACs, motors and irons, so the inverter does not restart into an overload.
Solar system shutdown procedure (typical order)
This is the common pattern.
On-grid inverter
- Switch off the AC breaker between the inverter and the grid.
- Switch off the DC isolator for the panels.
- Wait 5 to 10 minutes before touching anything near the inverter, and longer if the manual says so.
Hybrid inverter with battery
- Switch off heavy loads on the backup output.
- Turn the inverter off with its power button or menu, if it has one.
- Switch off the AC grid input breaker and the AC output (backup load) breaker.
- Switch off the DC isolator for the panels.
- Switch off the battery breaker, then the battery's own power button if it has one.
- Wait the time your manual specifies before restarting.
This is also how to turn off solar system safely before an electrician works on your house wiring, before a long trip, or when a storm or flood warning is issued.
Switch on solar inverter sequence (typical order)
On-grid inverter
- Switch on the AC breaker first.
- Switch on the DC isolator.
- Watch the screen. The inverter will run its checks and connect after a short grid-check delay.
Solis explains that closing AC before DC avoids a delay of a minute or more caused by a "No Grid" alarm when DC comes up first.
Hybrid inverter with battery
- Switch on the battery (power button, then breaker, as the battery manual says).
- Switch on the AC grid input breaker.
- Switch on the DC isolator for the panels.
- Turn the inverter on if it has a power button.
- Switch on the AC output (backup load) breaker once the screen shows normal status.
- Switch your loads back on gradually.
Huawei's power-on procedure for its SUN2000 L1 hybrids follows this pattern: battery first, then the AC switch, then the DC switches, then a check of the indicator LEDs. It also notes that if DC is on but AC is off, the inverter reports a grid loss alarm and waits; and if no battery is detected, it reports a battery alarm.
After the restart
- Watch the screen and app for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Confirm the PV, grid and battery readings look normal for the time of day.
- If the same alarm returns, do not cycle the switches again. Photograph it and call your installer.
What an engineer will check
If one restart does not clear the problem, an engineer will look for the real cause, for example:
- A breaker that trips because of a loose, overheated or wrongly sized connection (see solar breaker tripping).
- Low insulation resistance in the DC wiring (see inverter isolation fault).
- Grid voltage or frequency outside limits, or a missing phase (see grid fault during load-shedding).
- Battery communication or BMS protection.
- Wrong settings after a firmware update or a factory reset.
How to make restarts easy and safe
- Label every switch with its function and its number in the sequence.
- Keep a printed shutdown card next to the inverter with both sequences, and a copy on your phone.
- Teach one other family member the routine. If you live abroad, make sure your on-site contact knows it; see solar for your family home while you live abroad.
- Do it once with your installer at handover. Our guide to your first 30 days with a new solar system covers what to learn early.
- Keep the switches reachable and dry, not behind stored furniture or in a room that floods.
How Solar Works Pakistan helps
At handover we show customers how to operate their system, including the inverter and monitoring app.
If a restart does not clear a fault on a system we installed, WhatsApp 0336 666 4321 with a photo of the screen or app and the inverter model. Our own engineering staff handle the complaint, and we target sending service personnel within 48 hours of a registered complaint to begin diagnosis; repair time depends on the fault and parts. Our 1-year service warranty applies under the applicable project terms. See how after-sales service works.
We can also inspect systems installed by other companies, as a chargeable service, across Punjab.
Frequently asked questions
How to restart solar inverter after a fault?
Photograph the alarm, switch off heavy loads, then follow the shutdown order in your manual: AC side, DC isolator, battery. Wait the time the manual gives, then switch on in its start-up order. If the fault returns, stop and call an engineer.
What is the correct solar system shutdown procedure?
For a typical on-grid system: AC breaker off first, then the DC isolator, then wait. For a typical hybrid: loads off, inverter off, AC breakers off, DC isolator off, battery off last. Your model's manual gives the exact steps.
What is the switch on solar inverter sequence for a hybrid?
Usually battery first, then the AC grid breaker, then the DC isolator, then the inverter and finally the backup load breaker. Some brands differ, so check the manual or your installer's handover sheet.
How do I turn off solar system safely before going on holiday?
Follow the full shutdown procedure in your manual. Many owners leave the system running instead, since it is designed to run unattended; ask your installer which suits your system, particularly if you have a battery that should not sit fully discharged.
Why does the DC isolator have to go off after the AC breaker?
With AC off first, the inverter stops drawing power from the panels, so the DC isolator opens with no current flowing. Breaking DC under load can cause arcing and damage the switch.
How long should I wait before switching the inverter back on?
Follow the manual. Solis advises waiting 5 to 10 minutes after switching off before working near the inverter, because it still holds stored charge inside.
Is it safe to restart my inverter every day to clear a fault?
No. A fault that needs daily restarts is a real problem that should be found. Repeated restarts hide the cause and can wear switches and components.
