If the inverter is working but only the screen is blank, see inverter display blank or not working. For fault codes on an inverter that does start, see our solar inverter faults guide.

What an inverter not turning on usually means

Inverters do not take power from a wall socket. Where the power to start comes from depends on the type:

  • On-grid (grid-tied) inverters wake up when the panels give enough DC voltage. With no sun there is nothing to power them, so a dark screen at night is normal. They also need the grid present before they export.
  • Hybrid and off-grid inverters can start from the battery, the grid or the panels, but most have an on/off button or switch. Inverex's manual for its Nitrox hybrid, for example, says to press the on/off button on the side of the case after the battery is connected, and that with no battery but PV or grid present, the screen lights up showing OFF.
  • Large three-phase inverters often have only LED lights, not a full screen. Huawei's residential SUN2000 manual, for example, says that when both LEDs are off, both the DC and AC sides are off.

So "no display" can mean the inverter has no input at all, the input is switched off, the inverter has shut down to protect itself, or something inside has failed.

Safety box

Do not open the inverter, the DC isolator box or the battery, and never pull MC4 connectors. Panels produce DC voltage whenever light falls on them, even with every breaker off.

If you smell burning, see smoke, hear crackling, see water inside or the inverter was hit in a storm, do not try to restart it. Switch off from a safe distance only if you can do so without touching wet or damaged equipment, keep people away and call a qualified engineer.

Step-by-step safe owner checks

  1. Note the time and weather. If it is night, early morning or very foggy, an on-grid inverter will simply be waiting. Our guide to inverters starting late in the morning explains start-up voltage.
  2. Look and smell before you touch. Any burn marks, melted plastic, water stains, swelling or smell? If so, stop and call for help.
  3. Know your system type. On-grid, hybrid or off-grid? It decides what the inverter needs to start. Your handover file or the label on the side will tell you.
  4. Check the switches by eye. Look at the AC breaker, the DC isolator, the battery breaker and any main breaker in the distribution board. Note any that are off or tripped. If one has tripped, read solar breaker tripping before resetting it, and reset only once.
  5. Check the grid. Are other lights in the house on? Has the voltage protector cut off? An on-grid inverter waits for the grid; during load-shedding that is normal, as covered in inverter grid fault during load-shedding.
  6. Check the battery (hybrid systems). Are the battery's own lights on? If the battery is dark too, the inverter may have nothing to start from. See lithium battery not turning on.
  7. Press the power button as the manual says. Some need a short press, some a long press, some a switch underneath the case.
  8. Restart once in the manufacturer's order. Huawei's sequence for its residential SUN2000, for example, is battery switch, then AC switch, then the DC switches, then wait about a minute before reading the lights. Other brands differ. Our guide on how to restart a solar system safely explains the general idea.
  9. Check the app's last report. The time the app last received data tells you when the inverter went off.
  10. Take photos of the inverter, all breakers and the model label, then contact your installer.

Common causes, in order of likelihood

  • No sun or not enough sun for an on-grid inverter: normal, not a fault.
  • A switch left off after cleaning, maintenance or a load-shedding scare.
  • A tripped DC or AC breaker cutting the inverter's input or output.
  • A battery that has shut down, leaving a hybrid inverter with no start-up power during an outage.
  • A protective shutdown, for example after repeated overload or overheating. See inverter overheating.
  • A disconnected or damaged string, so no DC reaches the inverter.
  • Surge or lightning damage: see inverter damaged by lightning.
  • Water entry after rain: see water in inverter.
  • An internal failure, such as the auxiliary power supply or control board.

What an engineer will check

  • DC voltage and polarity at the inverter input for each string, with the right meter and protective equipment.
  • String fuses, combiner box and DC isolator, for a blown fuse or a burnt contact.
  • AC voltage at the inverter terminals and the AC breaker.
  • Battery voltage and BMS status, and the battery communication cable.
  • Signs of surge, water or heat damage inside the inverter, which only a qualified technician should open.
  • Fault history from the inverter's memory or the monitoring platform.
  • Firmware and settings, in case an update or setting change caused the shutdown.
  • Repair or replacement: whether the fault falls under the manufacturer's warranty, and if not, whether repair makes sense. See replacing an old or faulty solar inverter and our solar inverter price guide.

How to prevent it

  • Label the switches and keep the start-up and shutdown order next to the inverter.
  • Fit proper surge protection and earthing. See our earthing and surge protection guide.
  • Keep a battery reserve so a hybrid inverter always has power to start during an outage.
  • Keep the inverter shaded, ventilated and dry.
  • Check the app daily for a week after any switch-off, so a dead inverter is noticed the same day, not at bill time.

Solar Works customers

If we installed your system, WhatsApp 0336 666 4321 with a photo of the inverter, the breakers and the inverter model label. Our 1-year service warranty applies under the applicable project terms; inverter defects go through the manufacturer's warranty.

We can also inspect inverters on systems installed by other companies, as a chargeable service, across Punjab.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my inverter not turning on?

Most often it has no input: no sun for an on-grid inverter, a switch or breaker off, or a hybrid inverter's battery switched off. Check those first. If it is dead on a sunny midday with everything on, call an engineer.

Why is my solar inverter not starting in the morning?

An on-grid inverter needs a certain DC voltage from the panels and a healthy grid before it connects. In winter fog or early morning it may wait until the light improves. If it starts later than usual every day, ask your installer to check.

Why is my inverter dead with no display at all?

Either it has no power from any source, or it has shut down or failed. Check the breakers, the battery and the grid. If all are fine, an engineer needs to test the inputs and the inverter itself.

Why is my inverter not switching on when I press the button?

On a hybrid inverter the button needs a power source: battery, grid or panels. If the battery is off or in deep sleep and the grid is out, pressing the button does nothing. Check the battery first.

Is it safe to restart my inverter myself?

Only by the start-up order in your manual, once. Do not restart after a storm, water entry, a burning smell or a breaker that trips again.

Can lightning stop an inverter from turning on?

Yes. A nearby strike can damage the inverter's electronics even without a direct hit. Do not keep trying to start it; have an engineer test it.

Do you check inverters installed by other companies?

Yes, as a chargeable inspection across Punjab. Send the inverter model and photos on WhatsApp 0336 666 4321 first.
