What you will see

  • Rust appearing again at welds, edges or joints.
  • Paint lifting or bubbling over discoloured steel.
  • Repeated touch-ups at the same locations.
  • Loose flakes, staining or apparent loss of material.

Why it happens

The American Galvanizers Association explains that repairs to damaged galvanizing require suitable preparation and a compatible repair method. Applying an ordinary finish does not recreate an original hot-dip galvanized coating.

The attending team should identify the existing coating before proposing another repair. Ask whether the work addresses coating damage alone or whether an engineer must assess deteriorated steel and connections.

Useful repair documentation identifies the inspected area, preparation, coating system and any structural findings. A promise that one coat will stop all future rust is not a substitute for that assessment.

  • Save dated photographs from a safe, accessible location.
  • Gather the original structure specification and repainting invoice.
  • Note when rust first returned after the previous work.
  • Mention water collecting nearby or a change in exposure.
  • Existing construction photographs can help identify areas concealed after installation. Do not climb onto the structure to obtain new close-ups.

What not to do

  • Do not scrape load-bearing connections, tighten bolts or weld additional pieces yourself. Do not cover significant deterioration before it is documented. Avoid assuming every silver-coloured finish is galvanizing.
