Our inverter faults guide covers alarms in general; this page covers only the morning delay.
Inverter starting late in morning: what it means
Before a grid-connected inverter exports a single watt, it runs a short routine every morning:
- It wakes up once the panel strings give enough voltage to power its electronics.
- It checks the DC side, including the insulation resistance between the panel wiring and earth.
- It checks the grid: voltage and frequency must stay inside the allowed limits for a set time.
- It connects and starts tracking maximum power.
If any step fails or has to repeat, the start moves later. Solis's own late start-up guidance groups the causes the same way: the start-up voltage threshold, PV string problems (too few panels in series, shade, dirt or damage), and faults, most often low insulation resistance and grid overvoltage.
Inverter waiting status: normal or not?
"Waiting" (or "Standby", "Checking", "Initialising"; names vary by brand) is the inverter telling you it is still in steps 1 to 3. Seeing it at first light is normal. Seeing it for hours in full sun is not.

Inverter start voltage, explained simply
Every inverter has a minimum DC voltage it needs before it starts. It is printed on the datasheet as start-up voltage (or start voltage), usually next to the MPPT operating range. Solis gives typical bands of about 60 to 90 V for low-power inverters, 120 to 180 V for medium-power models and above 190 V for high-power ones. Huawei's SUN2000 three-phase models in the 12 to 25 kW class, for instance, list a start-up voltage of 200 V.(/guides/read-solar-inverter-datasheet/).]
String voltage rises with light. If a string has only a few panels in series, it may take a long time to reach the start voltage on winter, foggy or cloudy mornings. That is a design question. Our guide to series vs parallel wiring explains why panel count per string matters, and why it cannot simply be increased without checking the cold-weather maximum voltage (see PV overvoltage error).
Quick-check table: why is my solar inverter not starting in morning?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Safe owner check | Call an engineer if... |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starts a little after sunrise every day, then runs normally | Normal start voltage plus grid check | Compare with the same week last year in the app | Never, if output later in the day is normal |
| Starts much later in winter than in summer | Low sun angle, short strings, fog | Note start time per month | The delay is growing year on year |
| Starts late only on damp, foggy or post-rain mornings | Low insulation resistance until the array dries | Read the alarm list for an isolation or Riso message | It happens often, or the alarm stays after 11 AM |
| Starts, stops, starts again early in the morning | Grid voltage unstable or high at dawn | Note the grid alarm text and times | It repeats daily |
| One string starts much later than the other | East-side shade, dirt or a weak string | Compare PV1 and PV2 voltage in the app | The difference stays on clear, clean days |
| Late start began after new building, tank or tree nearby | New morning shade | Look at the array at 8 AM from a safe spot | Shade covers part of a string |
| Shows "Waiting" all day | Very low PV voltage or a DC-side fault | Check the DC isolator position and app values | Always |
Safe owner checks
You can do all of these from the inverter screen, the app and the ground. Do not open the inverter, junction boxes or DC wiring.
- Record the start time for a week. The daily graph in most apps shows when generation begins. Note it with the weather.
- Read the status and alarm list. Look for words such as Waiting, Isolation, Riso, Grid overvoltage, No grid or PV voltage low. Photograph the screen.
- Compare string voltages if your app shows them. PV1 and PV2 values at 8 AM should be close if the strings are the same size and face the same way.
- Look for morning shade. At 7 to 8 AM, the sun is low in the east and south-east. A neighbour's new floor, a water tank, a mumty or a tree that never shades at noon can cover a whole row at dawn. See how shading cuts solar output.
- Check the dust. A heavy layer of dust or bird droppings reduces early-morning current and can make a weak string start later. See how often to clean solar panels.
- Check the grid. If there was load-shedding at dawn, the inverter must wait for the grid to return and then run its check. Our guide on grid fault during load-shedding explains the wait.
- Do not keep restarting. Switching the inverter off and on does not make it start earlier; it only restarts the check routine.
Safety box. If the alarm is an isolation, earth or insulation fault, keep off the roof, especially when it is wet. Panel cables carry DC whenever there is daylight, even with the inverter off. Do not touch connectors or the structure. Read our isolation fault guide and call a qualified engineer.
What an engineer will check
- String design against the start voltage. The engineer compares the string's morning voltage with the inverter start-up voltage and the MPPT range, and checks the panel count per string for both cold-morning maximum voltage and low-light start.
- Insulation resistance. With proper test equipment, string by string, to find a damp connector, scraped cable or failing junction box that only shows when wet.
- Grid behaviour at dawn. Morning voltage spikes or swings can trip the inverter repeatedly before it settles. Solis notes that repeated disconnects of this kind make the inverter appear to start late. Our guide on grid voltage rise covers the afternoon version of the same problem.
- Orientation and tilt. A west-facing array naturally starts later in the day, because it sees little light until the sun climbs. See solar panel angle and direction for Punjab.
- Inverter settings. Grid profile, reconnection delay and any start-up settings are checked against the DISCO requirements. Owners should not change these.
- Mismatched strings. Strings with different panel counts or different panels on one MPPT input.
If the inverter starts on time but produces less than expected for the rest of the day, that is a different problem: see why your solar system is producing less than expected.
How to prevent a late start
- Design strings for both ends of the year. Enough panels in series to start on a foggy January morning, but not so many that a cold morning pushes voltage above the inverter maximum.
- Keep the east side clear. Plan for future tanks and floors at the survey stage.
- Keep connectors and cables sealed and off wet roof surfaces so that dew does not trigger insulation alarms.
- Clean on a sensible schedule, more often in dusty months.
- Keep the monitoring app online so you can spot a creeping start time early. If the app has stopped updating, see solar app offline.
How Solar Works Pakistan handles late-start complaints
For systems we install, complaints are handled by our own engineering and technical staff. WhatsApp 0336 666 4321 with a photo of the inverter screen or app, the inverter model, and your noted start times. We target sending service personnel within 48 hours of a registered complaint to begin diagnosis; final repair time depends on the cause, the weather needed to reproduce it, and any parts. Our 1-year service warranty applies under the applicable project terms. See how after-sales service works.
We can also inspect late-start and string-design problems on systems installed by other companies, as a chargeable service, across Punjab.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my solar inverter not starting in the morning?
It is usually waiting for the panel voltage to reach its start voltage, for a damp array to dry enough to pass the insulation test, or for the grid to be stable. A short delay after sunrise is normal. A long or growing delay on clear days should be checked.
What does inverter waiting status mean?
It means the inverter is powered but has not yet connected to the grid. It is checking the panel voltage, the insulation of the DC wiring and the grid. "Waiting" at dawn is normal; "Waiting" all day in full sun is a fault.
What is inverter start voltage?
It is the minimum DC voltage from the panels that the inverter needs before it begins its start-up checks. It is listed on the datasheet as start-up voltage, and it differs between models.
Why does my inverter start late only in winter?
Winter sun is lower and weaker, fog is common in Punjab, and dew lowers insulation resistance at weak spots. All three delay the start. If strings are short, the effect is bigger.
Why does my inverter start late after rain or fog?
Moisture can lower the insulation resistance of the DC wiring, so the inverter waits until the array dries. Repeated alarms of this kind point to a weak spot such as a damaged cable or poorly sealed connector, which an engineer should find.
Can I change a setting to make the inverter start earlier?
Owners should not change start-up, grid or protection settings. Some of them are set to meet DISCO requirements and protect people. An engineer can review the string design and settings together.
Does a late start reduce my electricity production a lot?
Early-morning light is weak, so a late start costs less than the same time at noon. It still adds up over a year, and a creeping start time is often the first sign of shade, moisture or a grid problem.
