What you will see
- The inverter reports excessive PV or DC voltage around startup.
- Generation begins later after the warning clears.
- The problem appears after more panels are added to an existing string.
- Cold, clear mornings produce a warning that warmer days do not.
Why it happens
Solar-panel open-circuit voltage generally rises as cell temperature falls. A string that appears acceptable in warmer conditions can exceed an inverter’s permitted input voltage in colder conditions if temperature effects were not properly allowed for.
The review needs the exact panel electrical data, series-connected panel count and inverter limits. Headline panel wattage or total array capacity does not establish whether a particular string voltage is suitable.
A warning disappearing later does not show that the design is safe. The operating condition that triggered it may simply have changed. Repeated morning events should be recorded rather than dismissed as a harmless startup habit.
Also confirm the complete message. A photograph prevents a grid-side warning from being mistaken for a PV-input problem and helps avoid an unrelated setting change.
Colder cells, higher string voltage
Warm afternoon
String voltage sits lower. No warning.
Cold, clear morning
Open-circuit voltage rises as cells cool and can pass the limit.
The warning clearing later does not prove the design is safe. The installer should check panel data, series count and inverter limits.
What you can check yourself
- Photograph the complete warning and the normal PV-input screen.
- Note the date, time and weather when the warning appears.
- Collect the panel and inverter models from invoices or installation records.
- Record whether panels were recently added, replaced or reconnected.
- Save the generation graph showing the delayed start or interruption.
- Use existing documents for the string layout. Do not go onto the roof to count connectors or trace how panels are connected. If the layout is unknown, tell us that it needs verification.
What not to do
- Do not unplug PV connectors, reconnect strings, raise protection limits or keep resetting the inverter. Switching off the grid supply does not establish that the solar wiring is safe to touch.
When to call us
- Contact us promptly for a recurring PV-overvoltage warning, particularly after an expansion. Follow a shutdown instruction only if it is documented for your exact installation and can be carried out safely; do not improvise an isolation sequence.
Winter mornings in Faisalabad and Lahore
Cold, clear winter mornings in Faisalabad and Lahore are when this warning tends to show. If it follows a panel expansion, send our team the event times and panel models.
Send us
