This guide is about a battery that will not wake up at all. If your battery switches on but will not charge, or empties too fast, see solar battery not charging or draining too fast.
What a lithium battery not turning on usually means
Every proper lithium solar battery has a BMS inside. It watches each cell's voltage, the current and the temperature, and it disconnects the battery before anything reaches a damaging limit. Our guide to the battery management system covers this in detail.
Two protective states look like a "dead" battery:
- Low-voltage cut-off. When the cells fall to their lower limit, the BMS stops the battery from discharging any further. The inverter may show "battery low", "no battery" or 0%.
- BMS sleep mode (deep sleep). If the battery stays near empty, many BMS units shut themselves down to save the last bit of charge. The lights go out and the battery may show no voltage at its terminals. To the inverter, the battery seems to have disappeared.
The risk is time. Even when switched off, a lithium battery loses a little charge on its own, and the BMS electronics also draw a tiny amount. A battery left in deep sleep for long enough can fall into deep discharge, where cells may be permanently damaged. Huawei's manual for its commercial LUNA2000 storage system, for example, sets much shorter recharge deadlines for batteries at a very low state of charge than for batteries stored half full, and says damage from over-discharge caused by late charging is not covered by warranty. Your battery's own manual gives its limits.

Safety box
Stop and keep away if the battery is swollen, hot, hissing, leaking or smells of burning. Do not switch it on, do not move it, and keep children away. Call a qualified engineer. For an emergency, see our fire safety guide for solar and lithium batteries and our guide to lithium battery swelling.
Never open the battery, pull its power cables, or "jump-start" it from another battery or a power supply, as some videos show. It can cause sparks, damaged cells and a void warranty.
Quick-check table
| Symptom | Likely cause | Safe owner check | Call an engineer if... |
|---|---|---|---|
| No lights at all on the battery | Switch or breaker off, or BMS sleep after deep discharge | Check the battery switch, breaker and the inverter's battery breaker; try the start-up order once | It stays dark after one correct attempt |
| Lights come on, then go off within seconds | Cells too low; BMS refusing to stay on | Photograph the light pattern | It repeats; do not keep pressing the button |
| Lithium battery dead after load shedding | Battery drained to its cut-off overnight; no sun or grid yet to recharge | Wait for grid or sun; watch the app for charging | It does not start charging within an hour of grid or sun returning |
| Battery 0 percent not charging | BMS blocking charge, communication lost, or battery too cold or hot | Read the inverter alarm and battery temperature in the app | Any BMS, communication or temperature alarm stays on |
| Battery unused for weeks or months | Self-discharge into deep sleep | Do not leave it; note when it was last charged | Always, and soon |
| Red or fault light on the battery | Internal BMS or cell fault | Photograph the light and the inverter screen | Always |
| Swelling, heat or burning smell | Cell damage | Keep away | Immediately |
Step-by-step safe owner checks
- Look before you touch. Check the battery from a short distance: any swelling, heat, smell, hissing or marks? If yes, stop and call for help.
- Read the battery's own lights or screen. Note whether there are no lights, a flashing pattern or a red light. Take a photo.
- Check the switches by eye. Most home batteries have a power switch or button and a breaker on the front. The inverter side also has a battery breaker or isolator. Note any that are off or tripped. A tripped breaker is a symptom; if it trips again, stop.
- Follow your manual's start-up order, once. Many batteries need the breaker on first, then a long press on the power button, then the inverter. The exact order and button time differ by model.
- Read the inverter screen and app. Look for "no battery", "battery under voltage", "BMS communication" or a temperature alarm, and the battery voltage reading if shown. Our guide to battery and inverter communication explains communication alarms.
- Give it a charging source. If the battery wakes but shows 0% or very low, it needs grid power or good sunshine to recharge. After a long load-shedding night, wait for the grid or the morning sun and watch whether charge power appears in the app.
- Do not keep cycling it. Repeated on-off attempts on a near-empty battery drain it further. One correct attempt is enough.
- Send details. Photos of the battery lights, the inverter screen and the battery model label make diagnosis much faster.
Why it happens in Punjab homes
The usual stories: a long load-shedding night followed by a foggy morning; a cut-off set so low that the battery is drained to the bottom every night (see SBU, SUB and utility-first modes); a house left empty for weeks with the inverter off and the battery connected, common in homes of overseas Pakistanis; or a new battery bought early and left in a store room.
What an engineer will check
- Cell and pack voltages through the BMS software or the manufacturer's service tool, to see how deep the discharge went.
- BMS logs and alarms, to find whether the battery shut down from low voltage, temperature, a communication loss or an internal fault.
- A controlled recovery charge using the manufacturer's approved method. Some inverter and battery pairs have an activation or forced-charge function for this; others need a service tool.
- Cell balance, since a deep discharge can leave cells uneven. Our guide to a battery percentage that is wrong or jumping explains what that does to the readings.
- Inverter settings: battery type, cut-off level, return-to-grid point and charger priority.
- Communication cable and protocol between battery and inverter.
- Warranty route, if a cell or BMS has failed. The manufacturer's warranty for each product.
How to prevent it
- Keep a reserve. Ask your installer to set a cut-off that leaves some charge in the battery, rather than draining it to the bottom every night. Our battery low voltage alarm guide explains these settings.
- Allow grid charging when it matters. In long outage spells or foggy winter weeks, a timed grid top-up can stop the battery sitting empty. See should you charge your battery from the grid at night?
- Before leaving the house for weeks, ask your installer how to leave the system, following the manufacturer's storage advice.
- Check the app weekly, and act if the battery sits at 0% for more than a day.
- Keep it cool and ventilated. See where to install your inverter and battery and how long lithium solar batteries last.
Solar Works customers
If we installed your system, WhatsApp 0336 666 4321 with a photo of the battery lights, the inverter screen or app, and the battery and inverter model. Our 1-year service warranty applies under the applicable project terms; battery defects go through the manufacturer's warranty. We supply lithium batteries and BESS from Luminey and current Huawei and Sungrow options; see our lithium battery price guide.
We can also inspect batteries on systems installed by other companies, as a chargeable service, across Punjab.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my lithium battery not turning on?
Usually because the BMS has switched it off after the charge fell too low, or a switch or breaker is off. Check the switches and lights, try your manual's start-up order once, and call an engineer if it stays dark.
What is BMS sleep mode?
It is a protective shutdown. When a lithium battery stays near empty, the BMS turns itself and the battery output off to save the last charge. The battery then looks dead and the inverter may not detect it until it is woken correctly.
Why is my lithium battery dead after load shedding?
A long outage can drain the battery to its cut-off before morning. Once the grid or sun returns, a healthy battery should start charging. If it does not, or the battery will not switch on, call your installer.
Why is my battery 0 percent not charging?
The inverter may not be detecting the battery, the BMS may be blocking charge because a cell is too low or the temperature is out of range, or communication may be lost. Read the alarm on the inverter and send it to your installer.
Can I jump-start a lithium solar battery with another battery?
No. Jump-starting a home battery bank can cause sparks, damage cells and void the warranty. Recovery should be done by an engineer using the manufacturer's approved method.
Is a deeply discharged lithium battery ruined?
Not always. Many recover if they are charged correctly soon enough. The longer a battery sits in deep discharge, the higher the risk of permanent damage, so act quickly.
Do you check batteries on systems installed by others?
Yes, as a chargeable inspection across Punjab. Send the battery and inverter model and photos on WhatsApp 0336 666 4321 first.
