Solar for rice mills in Gujranwala
The Gujranwala region is one of Punjab's main rice belts, with many husking, polishing and processing mills. Their loads suit solar in several ways, and they also bring specific design problems.
Why mills suit solar
- Much of the processing load runs during the day, when solar output is highest.
- Mill sheds and godowns offer large roof areas close to the load.
- Units bought from the grid at industrial or commercial tariffs are expensive, and generator power during outages costs more again.
What makes mill design harder
- Large motors. Huskers, polishers, elevators and blowers draw high starting currents. The system must handle these surges, often with soft starters or variable-frequency drives (VFDs) on the motors.
- Three-phase loads. Mills need three-phase inverters sized for the actual load profile. See three-phase vs single-phase inverters.
- Seasonal operation. Rice processing peaks after harvest. Outside the season, load drops, so the design must consider what happens to surplus under net billing.
- Husk dust. Fine dust from processing settles on panels and inverters. Plan cleaning access and keep inverter rooms enclosed and ventilated. See our solar panel cleaning guide.
- Demand charges. Solar reduces units bought but does not always reduce maximum demand (MDI). Read what MDI on your bill means.
Many mills also run a generator. A hybrid design with the right controller lets solar share load with the generator safely, and battery storage can help with short outages and demand peaks; see BESS for factories. Solar Works Pakistan does not sell generators, but we integrate existing sets into hybrid designs. Our guide to solar for rice mills, flour mills and agro-processing goes further, and our industrial and commercial solar page explains how we deliver these projects.
Sahiwal
Sahiwal and the surrounding district have a mix of homes, commercial buildings, dairy and agro-processing units. The same national panel prices apply, and the same design approach: size for your daytime load, then decide whether a battery is worth adding for evening use. Sahiwal falls under MEPCO, not GEPCO, so the DISCO paperwork differs from Gujranwala, though the NEPRA rules are the same.
GEPCO, MEPCO and net billing
GEPCO is the distribution company (DISCO) for Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, Narowal, Hafizabad, Wazirabad and Mandi Bahauddin. MEPCO covers Sahiwal, Multan and much of South Punjab. Both apply NEPRA's national rules. From our net metering and net billing guide:
- Net metering closed to new applicants on 9 February 2026. New connections come under net billing. Imports are billed at your normal tariff; exports are credited at the national average energy purchase price, reported at about Rs 10-11 per unit when the rules were notified.
- Existing agreements keep their terms until they expire. Changing system capacity can move you to net billing.
- Size limit. Solar capacity cannot exceed your sanctioned load; the overall cap is 1 MW.
- Three-phase. Net billing is available to three-phase 400 V or 11 kV consumers.
- Approval. Systems up to 25 kW are approved by the DISCO, with no NEPRA licence fee. Larger systems pay a one-time Rs 1,000 per kW to NEPRA, and systems of 250 kW and above need a load flow study.
- Transformer limit. New applications are refused once connected solar on a transformer reaches 80% of its rating.
For a mill with a seasonal load, the export rate matters: surplus in the off-season earns much less than the units you buy in season cost. Our green meter and net billing application guide lists the documents and timelines.

Can a rice mill run on solar?
A rice mill can run a large share of its daytime load on solar, working together with the grid, a generator or battery storage. Large motors and seasonal operation need careful engineering, so we design each mill from its load data.
Which DISCO covers Sahiwal?
Sahiwal is under MEPCO, while Gujranwala is under GEPCO. Both apply the same NEPRA net billing rules, but applications go to your own DISCO.
