A district built on canals, rails and roads
Khanewal was carved out of Multan district in 1985 and sits in the middle of the Multan division, bordered by Jhang and Toba Tek Singh to the north, Sahiwal to the east, Vehari to the south and Multan to the west. Its main tehsils are Khanewal, Kabirwala, Mian Channu and Jahanian. Two things shaped it:
- Canals and crops. The land came under cultivation after the Lower Bari Doab Canal was completed in 1913. Mian Channu today is known for cotton, wheat and mangoes, with sugarcane and oilseeds among the summer crops.
- Transport. Khanewal Junction is one of Pakistan's largest railway junctions, where the Lahore-Multan line divides, and the district is served by the Grand Trunk Road and the Lahore-Multan motorway. Mian Channu sits on the Grand Trunk Road.
Cotton ginning has a long history here: Khanewal's first ginning factories opened in the 1920s, next to a grain market built in 1917.
Flour mills, gins and agri-processing
Wheat brings flour mills and chakkis, and cotton brings ginning factories. Both run large motors, both are seasonal to some degree, and both often keep a generator for outages.
- Flour mills run steadily for much of the year, which suits solar during daylight. Large grinding motors need inverters and protection sized for their starting current; see solar for flour and rice mills.
- Ginning factories run hard after the cotton harvest and lightly for the rest of the year. Sizing to the season peak leaves a big off-season surplus that earns little under net billing. Highway and rail businesses
Because so much traffic passes through the district, many local businesses exist to serve it, and each has its own load pattern:
- Petrol and CNG stations with canopies, pumps, a shop and lighting that runs through the night. A canopy array and correct hazardous-area separation are the main design points; see solar for petrol pumps.
- Roadside restaurants and hotels with heavy AC, kitchen refrigeration and evening peaks; see solar for hotels and restaurants.
- Warehouses and goods depots near the junction and the motorway, with large roofs and modest daytime load. Roof space often exceeds the load, so sizing for self-use matters; see solar for warehouses.
Orchards, cold rooms and farms
Mango orchards around Mian Channu bring packing sheds and cold rooms that run hard in the summer season, often through the night. Refrigeration needs either a battery or a grid-and-solar design that accepts night imports; see solar for cold storage. Homes in Khanewal, Kabirwala and Mian Channu

Can a flour mill run on solar?
Solar can carry much of a flour mill's daytime load, working with the grid, a generator or battery storage. Grinding motor starts and night shifts need careful sizing, so we design from the mill's own load data.
Is solar worth it for a petrol station on the highway?
Usually, for the daytime load of the shop, pumps and canopy area. Night lighting and any 24-hour operation need grid or battery support, and the layout must respect hazardous-area separation.
Can I still get net metering from MEPCO?
Not as a new applicant. Applications from 9 February 2026 come under net billing. Existing agreements keep their terms until they expire.
