Why is a solar panel bubbling, peeling or turning yellow?

A change in a panel’s appearance should be described carefully. Dirt on the outer glass, yellowing visible beneath it and a layer separating at the back are different observations. They may need different responses. Do not try to expose or remove the affected layer to find out what it is. A useful report begins with the location, appearance and timing of the change, followed by a professional inspection where necessary.

What you will see

Bubble-like areas that appear to be within the module.
A film or backing layer that seems to be separating.
Yellow or brown discolouration visible beneath the glass.
A change around an edge, corner or connection-box area.
A reflection or photograph can also be misleading. State what you can actually see rather than assuming a material has failed.

Why it happens

PV modules contain bonded layers. Delamination means separation between layers that should remain bonded. Discolouration is a different condition, although multiple defects can occur together. IEA PVPS identifies possible performance and safety implications that depend on the affected material, location and extent.

The inspection should establish whether the observation concerns surface contamination, an internal change or damage to a protective layer. Continuing production does not settle all those questions, and visible ageing alone does not prove that every module needs replacement.

Ask for the findings to be linked to the actual panel model and condition. If manufacturer review is appropriate, photographs, serial records and the installation history should be preserved before any corrective work.

What you can check yourself

Note which side or edge appears affected, if visible safely.
Record the date and whether the area seems to be changing.
Gather existing installation and maintenance photographs.
Save alarms and production records from the same period.
Mention recent cleaning products, building work or unusual exposure.
Do not lift a panel or reach underneath the array to inspect its backing.

What not to do

Do not peel off material, puncture bubbles, reseal a module with glue or pressure-wash the affected area. Do not use an abrasive or solvent as an experiment. Leave repairs and any decision about continued operation to qualified assessment.

When to call us

Report apparent separation, damaged backing or persistent internal discolouration. Burning, exposed conductors or electrical warnings accompanying visible damage need prompt attention.
