Battery and charging problems
Each guide says what you will see, why it happens, what you can safely check yourself and when to call an engineer. Never open the DC side yourself: solar strings stay live whenever there is daylight.
Batteries
Inverter not detecting lithium battery
The battery is installed and switched on, but the inverter shows no battery, a communication alarm or a state of charge stuck at zero.
CAN or RS485 does not mean compatible
Many batteries and inverters list the same communication ports, yet still refuse to work together.
Battery percentage jumps or drifts
The battery shows full and then suddenly drops, sits at one number for hours, or reads differently on the battery and the inverter.
BMS offline alarms that come and go
The app briefly reports the battery or BMS as offline, then it reconnects by itself.
Battery backup shorter than estimated
An estimate of backup hours depends on the starting charge, the loads being supplied and the energy the system can actually deliver.
Battery drains when everything is off
Lights being off does not mean electricity use has stopped.
Using grid while the battery has charge
A battery charge percentage shows estimated stored energy.
More batteries, but not more appliances
Adding a battery may extend backup duration without increasing the number of appliances that can run together.
Adding a new lithium battery to an old bank
Expansion can be possible, but the answer depends on the exact battery system.
Battery capacity missing after expansion
After adding batteries, compare the completed installation with the expansion that was agreed.
Battery cell-imbalance alarm
A lithium battery contains individual cells that the battery management system monitors.
Battery breaker trips when inverter starts
A breaker that trips during startup needs investigation before another attempt.
Battery swelling, leaking or smelling
If a battery is smoking, hissing, releasing vapour or showing signs of fire, leave the area, alert others and call local emergency services.
Storing and restarting a solar battery
A vacant property, renovation or seasonal business closure may leave a solar battery unused for months.
Cooling alarm on a battery cabinet
A cooling alarm on a commercial or industrial battery system needs the exact fault description.
Fire or gas alarm on a storage cabinet
Treat a fire, smoke or gas alarm from a battery-energy-storage system as an emergency warning.
Luminey Battery Problems: Alarms, BMS Faults and What to Check
Most Luminey battery problems are the battery management system (BMS) doing its job: it has stopped charging or discharging because a cell voltage, current or temperature went outside the safe range, or because it lost communication with the inverter.
Inverter Battery Low Voltage Alarm: What It Means and What to Check
An inverter battery low voltage alarm means the battery voltage measured by the inverter has dropped to the warning or cut-off level set in its settings, so the inverter is about to stop, or has stopped, drawing power from the battery.
Lithium Battery Not Turning On: BMS Sleep and Deep Discharge
A lithium battery not turning on has usually not died.
Lithium Battery Beeping: What the Alarm Sound Means
Lithium battery beeping means the battery management system (BMS) has detected something outside its normal limits: most often low charge, too much current, a temperature that is too high or too low, cells drifting apart, or lost communication with the inverter.
Battery charging
Panels generating but battery not charging
Seeing solar production on the app does not necessarily mean power is available for battery charging.
Battery charging from grid on a sunny day
Grid charging during daylight can be intentional.
Solar battery charging slowly
Battery charging speed depends on available charging power and what the equipment can safely accept.
Battery stops charging before full
A battery that pauses below 100% is not automatically faulty.
Solar exporting before charging the battery
An app may show electricity leaving the property while the battery is partly empty.
Battery charging pauses in a hot room
Strong sunshine does not guarantee fast battery charging.
Battery charging limited on cold mornings
A lithium battery may accept less charging power on a cold morning, even when the panels have started producing.
Scheduled battery charging not starting
A charging time shown in an app is only one part of the operating arrangement.
One parallel battery charging slower
Several batteries connected to one system do not always show identical readings.
Battery switching between charge and discharge
A battery may charge while solar production exceeds demand and discharge when demand rises.
